Let me just say this: America’s Original Sin is not slavery. America is not special. America’s sins are not exclusive from those of the rest of our Lord’s creation. America’s Original Sin is the Love of money. The Lord makes a special effort in the first part of Genesis to point out what exactly was/is the trouble with man. The Lord calls Adam to the side. You all know about those side bar, back room conversations, right. The Lord calls Adam to the side and The Lord uses the word listen to call Adam’s attention to his sin. The Lord himself states right there in the third book of Genesis what the problem or the matter was and is until this very day. The Lord points out two things to Adam ….
- Because you have listened to the voice of your wife …
- And have eaten of the tree of which I have commanded you …
Genesis 3:17 (ESV)
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
The Lord explained to Adam and us what was and is going on right then and there. He is a good God, He has not left us wondering for one moment. We know what’s going on. It’s right there in the beginning, America’s Original Sin that is and it is not slavery, racism or white privilege. America’s Original Sin is the Sin of Adam. And, because we’re America does not mean we get a pass. Adam’s sin was disobedience and greed. Adam listened to the voice of his wife and not God. Adam ate of the tree, he was commanded not to eat. Adam and his wife were greedy. The currency of in the beginning was food. This desire for this currency caused Adam to sin and it also caused us and Adam to be slaves to sin.
In my first book To Love a white man, I explain how slavery in America was perverted like Instagram. Slavery in these United States of America did not start because of the color of my skin. Our ancestors were not initially enslaved because of the color of their skin. Yes, later, much later black people were shipped to America from Africa for the purpose of enslavement. But, please know American slavery did not start out as the evil thing it became. American slavery became evil because a group of folks loved money more than people. That is why, slavery is not over. People are still selling other people for money! Because, The love of money is the root of all evil. Remember, Judas and Jesus.
From September 29th through November 3rd your church, small group, school, or book club can join Jim Wallis at 8pm ET every Thursday for an exclusive six-week online Q&A about many pressing issues facing our nation.
As campaign rhetoric rises to a fever pitch, the issue of racial injustice in the United States remains painfully timely. Jim Wallis has been fighting for racial justice, healing, and reconciliation for more than five decades. During his recent nationwide book tour, Jim convened town hall meetings with leaders and activists of color, hearing their perspectives on and experiences of America’s history of structural racism and where to go from here.
In his New York Times bestseller America’s Original Sin, Wallis challenges the church to take the lead in confronting racism in all its forms—overt, implicit, and structural. He offers practical steps that we can take on the path to dismantling white supremacy in our society so that we can move toward true racial justice and healing. This will only happen when, as he puts it, “white Christians act more Christian than white.”
It would be super easy for us (the African-American Community) to sit around like peacekeepers as “white Christians learn to act more Christian than white.” It is our charge and our mission from God almighty himself to love a white man. When we extend our heart, hand and head to any man, we then have the capacity to love. We become peacemakers and peacemakers know how to activate the power of the Holy Spirit in positions of prayer to the only one that matters and His name is Jesus and He my friend is The Bridge to a new America. I am so not done.
Each Friday following the above mentioned Q&A, I will share with you my insights and thoughts on Season 2: The Good News Sunday Show.
