A word to not one did I say, I just simply walked the green mile to what I saw as my escape from Amazon. The green mile is a taped off area of floor which guides one around the first floor of the giant facility known as Amazon. The tape which outlines about a mile of floor is plain green duct tape. The area within the green duct tape is similar to a side walk in width. The green tape denotes the safe area in which to walk. So, that is exactly what I did yesterday morning, I made my way out of the cleaning cage and I walk the green mile to what I decided was my escape.
After looking at the new carts and cleaning chemicals with colorful cards attached I was tempted to stay. But, this temptation repulsed me of me. After using less than acceptable blue cleaning carts since my arrival, the new shiny black ones seamed so much better. On first glance, I noticed all the secret compartments and pull out drawers and I wanted one of my very own. I was tempted to stay and work for a company which I had no faith in for the use of a brand new super shiny cleaning cart!
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
I became employed as a contract worker inside Amazon on March 18th. I choose the Sunday – Wednesday schedule to accommodate my son’s senior year of football. I hopped to work there for at least one year but God had other plans. The company which employed me was not able to renew their contract at the end of May. And, the new company took possession of the cleaning cage on Sunday, June 5th. They even set out doughnuts and you know I ate two melted brown sugar covered pieces of fried bread. Amazon uses the word cage to describe spaces set apart by galvanized utility fencing within the facility.
Yesterday I arrived at the Amazon facility around 6:30 AM, my start time to work is 7:00 AM. But, I am one of those people who likes to get to work early! My Daddy used to say … If you ain’t early you’re late. And, over the years, I’ve found this statement to be no thing but true. I was the third employee to arrive to work, two other guys get there most everyday at 5AM and they were already working upon my arrival. They are early birds too. Some of the new company’s supervisors, were in place to greet folks as well. I stepped away to the free coffee machine to draw myself a cup, while I waited for 7AM.
Mind you I’m was not an Amazon employee, better known as Blue Badges, but a contract worker allowed in the facility to performed leased department like duties. All of these type individuals wear yellow badges and white badges. Badges must be worn and be available to scan at all times.
At 7AM all the workers were made aware of a meeting to be held in one of two places. The new company supervisors finally agreed on the later location and we all set down to view a power point on the new company’s cleaning processes and some basic new company procedures. This is where the doughnuts were presented! It was after viewing the power point and video that we were shown the new shiny carts and this was also my point of departure and my first step on the green mile of escape.
